schooler residence

The program called for a weekend lake house located in Lake Worth, TX. The client was a single woman but liked to entertain and wanted at least two guest bedrooms. Once this was established the client made two challenging specifics. The first was to have a wall at least fifteen feet tall to exhibit an Indian canoe she had acquired.

The second was to have no interior doors. Even though the guest rooms and bathrooms have doors for certain privacy, she wanted her bedroom to be completely open and yet screened for privacy. The solution was a series of staggered partitions. These partitions acted as a sift that allowed circulation from the front to the back of the house, and blocked of immediate view from the public living room to the private bedrooms

Other requirements were soon deemed necessary. The entire structure had to be built at least five feet above ground to allow for flooding. We decided to raise the house a full eight feet above ground to create a ground level patio.

All trees had to be spared. This determined the footprint of the building and influenced the design overall. The two trees on the west side of the house protected the house from the setting sun. This, along with a terrace brie soleil, allowed for an all glass wall in the living area.
