boston garden hotel

The program calls for a 500-room hotel to serve the visitors of both the Boston Gardens and Government Center. Lobbies, restaurants, and other public areas should be limited to only guest access, while retail space and outdoor spaces should be accessible and inviting to the general public. The site is currently in the control of the Boston Transit Authority and is the juncture between the elevated and subterranean railway of the Boston “T”. The Boston Redevelopment Authority is proposing that the “T” will eventually be completely submerged so that the elevated rail can be dismantled and further development of the site can be seen to its full potential.

The proposal is a developed urban space that links the Boston Gardens to Government Center while providing community development and program requirements. A grand monumental stair serves as the entrance from Government Center. This addresses the scale of the context and draws pedestrians into the site. The stair then becomes a path of circulation with a series of functional events (upper entrance to the hotel lobby, retail establishments, stairs and ramps leading down to the street below, and a bridge entering directly into the Gardens). The idea is to create a space strictly for pedestrian use totally separated from the dense urban fabric, yet still be a contextual address to its place in the city and a functioning part of the community.
