riveredge

RiverEdge is a mixed use development in an emerging arts district and underutilized industrial area bordering the Trinity River Corridor and downtown Dallas. Faced with physical and cultural challenges, the project employees music, literature, and architecture to resolve the problem and elevate three forms of art beyond their singular existence. The story of Scheherazade and the tales of the Arabian Nights (the struggle of overcoming obstacles through prolonged anticipation) serve as a phenomenal template for physical resolution, while Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s musical composition of Scheherazade is the literal template for cultural expression. Serpentine walls, residual courtyards, monumental stairs, bridges and roof-top gardens use Scheherazade’s suspenseful story-telling as metaphor. Conversely, through the use of AutoLisp, numerical values are extracted from the music and used as dimensional data in the arrangement of the building’s formal expression and programmatic organization. The resulting creation is a viable link between river and city / art and architecture.
